the topic i chose for my project was pollution and climate change. these things are very vital to our existence on earth because if our climate is damaged earth ow becomes a hazardous place to live. pollution on the other hand contributes to destroying the climate, and that is why we must put it to an end. for my project i hope to do a PowerPoint presentation with a constructed model of a city and what can happen when it gets very polluted.
Greenhouse Gases and their affects on the climate
Posted in energy on March 4, 2009 by ricksta99the main greenhouse gas is water vapor. other types of gases are carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, ozone and CFC’s. these gases keep are planet warm because without them the earth would be inhabitable because it would be so cold. each contribute a certain amount of gas to the atmosphere:
- water vapor, which contributes 36–70%
- carbon dioxide, which contributes 9–26%
- methane, which contributes 4–9%
- ozone, which contributes 3–7%
the one i feel that must be eliminated because it is very harmful to the environment, this gas is the gas that can be avoided because it is released into the atmosphere when we transport Cole, natural gas and oil. this gas also is created by the landfills decay.
Carbon Dioxide on the other cannot be avoided and comes from many natrual materials around which release a healthy dose of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

video projects
Posted in energy on February 9, 2009 by ricksta99i think that we should have like a PowerPoint type thing during the video project and we should each show an experiment. one of the thikngs we could talk about is entropy and kinetic energy and potential energy. i feel we should stress alot about entropy and its affects on energy and the transformation of it.
WASTE
Posted in Uncategorized on January 12, 2009 by ricksta99the upper blackstone water pollution plant provides water to eleven diffrent towns and districts. this plant was started in in 1978 becasue of an act that made this an secondary processer for water. this plant has improved the quality of water in the blackstone river. right now the plant is thriving and is doing much better than expected in its mission to clean out the blackstone river. the plant has upgraded itself by 80 million doolars worth of renovations. this plant overall is supposed to become more efficent in the next 25 years.
The Worlds Axis in Relation to the Sun
Posted in Uncategorized on January 9, 2009 by ricksta99the world sits on an 23.5 angle. in some seasons that angle is pointing toward the sun or awayfrom it. this is how we get our seasons. we can tell what type of season it is by the height of the sun. this is becasue on june 21 the sun is at its highest point which means that it is summer. at september 21 the sun has its equinox which is when the earth is neither tilted toward the sun nor away from it, this can be explained as the earth being some what straight. in the changing of the seasons we have 2 equinox’s and solcites’s. the next equinox is on march 21 start of spring, and the soltcits is on december 21 the start of winter. this makes alot of sense becasue at the start of spring the weather is preety mild and with the earth being not titlted away from the sun nor near it the weather should be more mild.
WATER SOURCES
Posted in Uncategorized on December 11, 2008 by ricksta99this recent field trip to the water plant has been an eye opener for me and many of my class mates. this was really interesting becasue it showed me how recognize that the water just dosent come from lake but it goes through a process. this has provided me with the information i need to explain to my family that water is a very depleting resource and that we shouldnt be using it without any regard. i think that if we start to use this resource more knowingly then we will be able to accomplish great things in salviging this resource.
Buffone Garden
Posted in Uncategorized on October 27, 2008 by ricksta99Today I learned that worms are an important part to the decomposing process in .the buffone garden. Worms do an excellent job in breaking down matter into new fresh nutritional soil. Worms often need warm environment in the various decomposing bins around the buffone garden. You know when the decomposing is working when you are able to see that the worms have made there way to the top of the bins, this shows that the worms have finished decomposing the bottom of the bin. We also learned in class about the various ways that the turbine at holy name functions.
At the Farm
Posted in Uncategorized on October 15, 2008 by ricksta99the trip friday turned out to be very interesting because i learned many new things such as the way as to how to milk a cow, and i was able to see how corn was harvested. i learned that a lot of the times it is also good to have a barn dog that will watch over all the animals. the most important thing that i tool away from this trip was the fact of how they processed the milk and made it good so that people could drink it.
day at the garden
Posted in Uncategorized on September 18, 2008 by ricksta99at the garden today we had a lot of fun. in the garden we learned about the types of vegstable that can be grown in new england. we observed many diffrent types of tomatos and peppers. i had the chance to eat a pepper, the peppers were really hot and delicous. we picked a many tomatos that were just the right color for picking. we also observed a cabbage that was huge, it was so big that we weren’t able to pick it without tearing out the root of the veggie. overall i thought today was a really cool class and i do look forward to the next time we are able to visit the garden.
